Continuing the Killer Character's blogfest hosted by the charming Deana Barnhart and E.R. King, today's post is on our fave literary protagonist.
This is a tough call. But I've narrowed it down to three.
3. Becky Sharp from Vanity Fair --- Love her bold bravery. When life gave her lemons, she made lemonade. She wasn't what I'd call a sweet, lovable MC, but she was real.
2. Scarlet O'Hara from Gone with the Wind --- Not the most modest or considerate MC, but that's why I liked her. She had spunk, and she got the job done. She didn't let others walk all over her. She was tough as nails, and far from boring. I never knew what this little lady was gonna do next.
1. Edmond Dantes from The Count of Monte Cristo --- This could be my fave story of all time. Could be, but the jury is still out. Why do I love Edmond? The tribulations he endured were horrendous. His character arc is unique, in that, he began as a noble, kind man. When wrong was done to him by his very best friend, which resulted in Edmond's imprisonment and the loss of his fiance, he sank into an all time despair--a despair that resulted in a life long ambition to get revenge. The ironic part is Edmond was so consumed with revenge, he was blinded to all the good fortune to come his way after his escape from prison. I loved following his journey.
Tune in Friday for Killer Characters Part Three and find out who my fave antagonist is. I'll also be posting for my blog chain and you can see what monster scares me the most! Ha! I love Halloween!
Thanks for stopping by! I love your comments. :) Who is your fave protagonist (s) ?

You picked my all time favorite! Love Edmond Dantes. Not only have I devoured the book, I've watched various movie versions.
I picked James Bond. This character has stood the test of time and will continue to do so for generations to come.
Becky Sharp. I must admit I couldn't handle her. Nope. Sorry! LOL!!!!
But yes, great protagonist!!!!
Take care
x
These are all great choices. I especially love Scarlett. This is such a fun fest, I'm looking forward to reading the antagonists and monsters! :)
Amazing choices! I love those complex protagonists like Becky Sharp~ the ones you can't really love (except in bits and pieces), but you end up getting caught up in their story anyway~ because they're so stinking interesting. She's a go-getter, that's for sure. So is Scarlet. Now I really want to read The Count of Monte Cristo!
Being a mystery writer I'd be remiss if I didn't go with Sherlock Holmes. What an interesting character with so much hidden below the surface! :)
Love Edmond. Resiliency in a character is a must, whether what they want is good or not :)
Ooo, Edmond and Scarlet. AWESOME! Scarlet is truly one of the best characters of all time. And Edmund? Love him!
I thought about picking Scarlett! Hubby hates her, thinks she's a spoiled brat, lol
I've only seen the movie if the Count of Monte Cristo. Loved it but I have to read the book!
Edmond! Why didn't I think of him :) He is so smart and conniving--I love it! Great post.
Great choices. I love what you said about Becky. I like MCs to be real above all.
These are great choices!
I think you're right about Miss Scah-let. But I also think that Melanie as her foil really helped to mold both characters into strong--yet incredibly different--women. Melly was even more influential on Scarlet's life than Rhett was, I'd argue.
Although, Rhett Butler? Be still mah heart...
I would also add Heathcliff to that list, but Wuthering Heights is my favourite book, so I'm a bit biased. :)
Really good choices here. Again, complex characters.
Great choices. You cheated LOL, but I love all three. I have always had a fondness for Scarlett. She is a tough and spunky southern woman.
Thank you for visiting my blog. I apologize for the trouble that you had leaving a comment. I am trying a new method for comments, but it seems to be causing more trouble than it is worth.
Great choices! I love, love, love The Count of Monte Cristo! :) It even plays a little part in my novel!
The best part about your choices are their flaws. None of the stories surrounding them would have happened if they hadn't reacted to a situation in a certain way.
Edmond and Becky undergo changes to their character that address these flaws (Scarlet to a lesser degree, if I'm remembering the book correctly), which is part of the reason they're so well-rounded.
Scarlet is intriguing despite--or perhaps, because of--her flaws.
Becky was a "love to hate" character for me. I often wanted to slap her.
I love Scarlett, some of the time. I'll always admire her determination but she could be a real bitca!
I haven't read The Count of Monte Cristo but I sure did love Jim Caviezel in the movie. I'd like to watch it right now, as a matter of fact.
Excellent choice on the last one. The latest movie version was awesome.
Tough question... I'd sat Rose from Stephen King's Rose Madder and Katerina from Taming of the Shrew.
Excellent choices! I love how you pick protags that are clearly flawed too. That is what makes such a good story in my opinion:)
Scarlet's my gal (My daughter's middle name is for her, only because her Father wouldn't let me give it to her for a first name!).
I tried and tried, but couldn't pick a favorite! Great question, though. Thanks!
Florence leaving a comment as "anon" ... I love so many of the characters picked to far. Loved Scarlet, I am in love with Sherlock Holmes. I have all of Conan Doyle's books. Best film version done on BBC by Jeremy Brett. Who doesn't love James Bond? For sci-fi lovers, Ridley from Alien and Spock from Star Wars.
My favorite female of all time hasn't changed since the day I found her ... film done to perfection by Roselyn Russell ... none other than Mame Dennis :)
I love the Count of Monte Cristo. Its one of the few classics that I've picked up and not put down.
What a fun blogfest! I love THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, and the movie that this pic comes from was really great.
Who's my favorite protagonist? Well, I'm kinda partial to Buffy. Are we talking books here? Then, um, I'd say Kevin from THE FIONAVAR TAPESTRY. :)
These are all great choices. Particularly Edmond Dantes. A very complex character!
Oh, the everlasting Count of Montecristo... Great choice! The others are also good, but Dantes is especially dear to me. Yep, the character arc is brilliant, as is the fact that he gets caught up in revenge and loses sight of the good that's come his way. Thanks for sharing!
Ooh...I pick Dantes. I want a do-over...I didnt think of him first!
I still haven't read Vanity fair, but your other choices are fantastic!
Scarlett O'Hara was my second choice. Complicated woman. Feisty, fearless. Tough as nails. Resilient. My kink of gal.
Monte Cristo is one of my all time favourite books ever! Good pick!
