Day 1 A-Z

We made it! And I've got great news!!! I still don't have an agent or publisher!! Woo-hoo!! That means I still make my own deadlines and write whatever I want!  :/

Um, yeah ... April Fool's. That's my feeble attempt of dragging out the silver lining.

But hey today's day one of Blogging A-Z and my theme for the month is favorite characters from A-Z.

Today's choice for letter A:

Appropriately enough, this is also my all time favorite character. Adam from the 1990s TV series Northern Exposure. The writers who dreamed up this guy were pure geniuses. Let me give you a brief bio:

Adam is well traveled, well-read, familiar with all the finer cultural customs, and is a gourmet chef. He's studied all over the world, speaks fluent Cantonese, and makes the best dishes anyone in Cicely, Alaska, among other parts of the world, has tasted. Sounds like a winner, right?

Well, now let's talk about his flaw. Adam is rude, brash, stubborn, discourteous, un-hygienic, and sequesters himself out in the wilderness of Alaska to live like a slob. Mind you, he still takes the time to travel and visit the finer cities of the world where he's well known for his gourmet dishes. But his preference, is the boonies, away from society because, in short, he hates people. (And after working in customer service for fifteen years, I can sometimes totally relate.)

His attention to detail with his cooking is in direct contrast to every other area of his life. Multi-layers.

Each time Adam would show up on an episode of Northern Exposure was a treat. He was brilliantly played by Alan Arkin. Watching Adam in action makes me wonder just how creative I can get when crafting my own characters. I'm not sure reading about him would ever do his character the same justice as having him to come to life on screen, but he's definitely an inspiration.

I leave you with a quick two-minute clip of Adam in action. If you've never seen him, you should really have a peek. Totally worth it.

That's it for me! Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you'll be back to see my remaining selections of characters. I promise to keep them short!

How about you? Any favorite characters starting with the letter A? Did you know Adam from Northern Exposure, or anyone like him in real life? What're your thoughts on him?

I never watched Northern Exposure, but I do have a favorite book character who starts with an A - Alais de la Courcel from Kusiel's Legacy :)

God, I'd forgotten about Northern Exposure! I loved that series. Mind you, I sort of got a bit confused when that New York doctor found a portal back to NY (or am I confusing myself here?)?

Nice start to A-Z:)

I loved Northern Exposure but it has been so long that i cannot remember him. My favorite characters were John Cabott as the radio DJ and Ed (I think that was his name). He was a goofball.

Although I'm sorry you don't yet have an agent or a publisher (neither do I), I do appreciate your attempt at dragging out the silver lining.

I think my favorite A characters are Anya and Andrew from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They were always so much fun!!

I loved Northern Exposure! And I always love whatever Alan Arkin does. Haven't seen him in a while, but now that you've brought up this series, I'm ordering it on Netflix. Time to go north to Alaska again!

Haven't seen Northern Exposure, but remember the name. Can't say I know anybody like him. He sounds like such a contrast in character.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE in general was an awesome series, but you really picked out a great "character".

I loved Northern Exposure! Thanks for bringing back some great memories

I definitely knew Adam. His best scene was in the last season when he posed as the gatekeeper on Joel's quest.

They *really* don't make TV like that, anymore.

Wonderful start, PK.

Great choice for A and for a theme, looking forward to the rest of your characters.

I love your sense of humor. If we can't laugh at ourselves then life would be miserable indeed wouldn't it? I loved Northern Exposure too.

Forgot about Northern Exposure! But that was on the air while I was in college, and I didn't do much TV watching then.

Hi, PK. I totally remember that show. And you're right! Arkin was great. I'm sorry I haven't been by in a while. *waves*
Wishing you a great week.

Yes, Arkin's character was great.

I hear you on the customer service rant. I have a friend who is a supervisor at a call center. Well, she is on sick leave now with hypertension, poor gal.

She has related some nightmare calls she has handled. You know what, most of the rude people are us Americans! Go figure.

Looking forward to tomorrow's B character.

I heard once that there is a character for everyone on Northern Exposure - that the show encompassed the most common archetype characters. If that's true, who would you have been?

fOIS In The City said...

Fine then, PK. Since you stole my best A character from one of my all time favs. Adam was the man, the best supporting character of that show ... better than his receptionist or the grocer lady, better than Adam's OCD wife ... Adam is a classic !!

Well if I must find another A character I'll go to the opposite end of the spectrum and select Anne of Green Gables and on the TV series my favorite along with Anne is the late Coleen Dewhurst as her adopted mom :) I am telling you that no little girl, ex-tom boy should grou up without knowing Anne. She is as important to little girls as Nancy Drew or Jo from Little Women.

Glad to see you back here and thanks for a great start to this series :)

William Kendall said...

I remember the series, and the character. Arkin really made him a memorable, absolutely zany character.

The first A that comes to mind for me (it's a Canadian thing), has to be Anne Shirley, of course....

Gosh, I loved that show but I'm not remembering this guy so much so now I need to watch it again . .. hmm, wonder if it's on Netflix? Well, I may miss the rest of your A-Z posts until next Monday since I have company coming from Michigan tonight but have fun:):) BTW, if you're interested, there's still one more day left to enter the Easter Basket Full of YA books giveaway on my blog!
