So in case anyone wants to know, my work schedule is weekends, when I can easily blog and read other blogs and surf the net in the middle of the night. During the week when everyone else is working, I write and do the mommy/wife thing. So I may be slow blog hopping, but I make up for it on weekends.
Anyway, today is the letter J :
And in keeping with my monthly theme of fave characters, here are two characters the world would be less interesting without:
Captain James T. Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard
Two completely different leadership styles and personalities, but equally effective on the job as starship captain. What I love about James T. Kirk is his ability to manipulate his own recklessness and use it to his advantage. A brilliant mind, a true friend, and a brave and fearless leader.
As for Jean-Luc Picard, well who couldn't love that polished reserve. A true Renaissance man indeed, not afraid to stick up for what's right and for those he cherishes. Kirk is a hard act to follow, but Picard had enough of his own individuality to pull it off with flying colors.
The writers of the Star Trek TV series and films really knew how to develop these characters and keep the audience relating to them. After all, they voyaged where no one had voyaged before, and even that isn't enough to keep fans following if they can't bond with the characters.
How about you? Are you a fan of both Kirk and Picard? Who's ship would you want to be on if you were a member of Starfleet? Have another J character to share?

It's always annoying those debates on who's better, Kirk or Picard. They're both awesome in their own ways. If you're wanting to go fight Klingons and stuff (or score with alien chicks) then Kirk is your man. If you need to negotiate a peace treaty or solve some weird science problem then you want Picard.
I'm not a Star Trek fan (so much so that I almost wrote "star wars" just then) but I suppose I'd have to go with Kirk because I developed a crush on Chris Pine after I saw the new Star Trek (not Wars) movie.
I've seen the movies, and some of the TNG series, but not much of the original series. Certainly not enough to be a Trekkie. I actually rather liked Voyager more, for taking characters out of the usual neck of the galactic woods...
As J characters go, I'd actually have to go with the definitive James on this one.
Bond. James Bond.
I'm not really a Trekkie, although I did watch an episode here and there. I like the whole Star Trek concept very much. Just not a Trekkie though. Kinda hard to find a girlfriend hahaha.
I'd have to be on Cap'n Kirk's ship cos if I ever was assigned to Cap'n Picard's I'd be arrested for strangling Deanna Troi. Then again I'd probably still be arrested if I were on Cap'n Kirk's team for stalking Lt. Uhura. Ahem.
Take care

Love them both, but Picard gets bonus points for stability and a um, better moral fiber.
Go Team Picard!
I love them both, but Picard is my favorite :)
Capt. Kirk was a bit smarmy (sorry, just my opinion) and Picard is just as he is, take him or leave him...so I'll take him! LOL
Must be Picard!!!
I have to lean toward Picard. Although, the Kirk in the newest Trek film scored some points with me. He just seemed to ooze the brash and daring behavior that makes Kirk unique.
I agree about the character development aspect of the show(s). Probably why they're still going strong!
I liked them both for different reasons. But my favorite J character would have to be Jo from Little Women.

I'd want to be on Kirk's ship just because of the cool retro 60's clothes...although to be fair they weren't really retro at the time ;)
Patrick Stewart is amazing. I think it's his voice. I could listen to him all day.
Great choices for "J!"
I'm in the Picard camp. Kirk was just too much of a womanizer and kind of an alpha male cruising around the galaxy with his schlong hanging out.
Hi! I'm stopping by from the A to Z Challenge. I'm looking forward to reading your posts.
Giggle, Laugh, Cry
Both good but no one beats Picard.
I never liked the original series. But loved Next Generation and Jean-Luc Picard.
Oh, what a cool choice!! I think I'd rather go with Kirk.
Awesome J word!
What a hard choice! They are so different, but both so cool. I really don't know which one to chose.
Didn't really watch either, but somehow I've managed to incorporate "Make it so," into conversations, so I guess I'll pick Picard.
My husband loved Star Trek, I'm not sure he was alive when the second captain appeared.
Great Post.
Yvonne.
Gotta love Picard. I swear I wanted to name my firstborn Jean Luc had it been a boy. :)
Not really a Star Trek fan, however, I do have to say they are great characters. :D
Yes! I grew up on Star Trek and Captain James T. Kirk. But Picard does a good job too; I'd let either one be the captain of my starship. :)
I grew up with Picard, as opposed to Kirk, so it's Jean-Luc for me. Making out with every alien woman going always seemed a trifle ridiculous!
Wow PK, you've got quite a thing going for Picard. I am an older fan of the show but my fav wasn't Captain Kirk it was the character played by Leonard Nemoy ... remember anyone?
I missed a huge part of the alphabet but love your take on the J's ...
I'd have to opt for captain James T. Kirk, unless of course I was some underling beaming down to some inhospitable planet. Ever notice how the new guy in the series was always the first to die?
Picard was okay as well, but I liked the reckless abandon of Jim.
Picard all the way.

I'm an original Trekkie fan. I used to daydream that Captain James T. Kirk was my real father and that he'd beam me up, and I'd live on the Starship Enterprise. I never watched the newer version.

I've always found Picard to be boring. I'm a Kirk fan for sure.
Interesting how the spin off lasted longer than the original. Star Trek was only on for 3 seasons. It's incredible what kind of staying power it has had.
I might have to say Picard, because I see Kirk and I think of all of Shatner's funny characters. :)
Stewart was always my fave...
Gotta go Kirk, especially after the latest Star Trek movie where we see his beginnings.
Your blog is so fun! I had no idea, but I'm putting it in my blogroll now. I was especially tickled when I saw James T. Kirk. Cool!
