Man-shaped, roughly man-sized, ugly and filthy. Dull, corrupt beings who only know how to destroy, not create. When I read Lord of the Rings, I imagined orcs looking a little different than how they were portrayed in Peter Jackson's movies. For me, they had pig snouts and demon eyes, peeling flesh. That's not too far off, I guess. And seriously, who could deny the creepy coolness of the make-up and costumes in the films. WETA did an amazing job at bringing these fantastical creatures to life ... so much so I'm still not ready to let my seven year old watch the films.
Have you ever watched any of the making of LOTR trilogy from the DVD sets? It's really fascinating. I salute Peter Jackson through and through for the masterpiece genius of the LOTR film versions. I saw every movie in the theatre twice and own the extended version DVDs. And ... okay this is kind of embarrassing because it shows what a geek I am, but I have a closet full of LOTR action figures, including a couple of orcs. lol Once I get my office remodeled, they shall be mounted on the walls in crowning glory. Yes, I know I have a great sickness and may need some counseling. Matter of fact, I'm happy to accept my bathrobe and slippers and medicine cup in exchange for my freedom and take up residence in the local asylum. As long as they have books and movies and I can write .. oh and my family can visit.
And I promise not to let this happen:

I went to Trilogy Tuesday which was— if you don't know— a limited movie theater experience the day before the theatrical release of the Return of the King. It started at 11am and involved watching extended editions of the first two films followed by the premiere of the last film in the trilogy at midnight. I had to drive to Rhode Island (four hours away) to do it but it was totally awesome and so worth it.

Oh I can't wait for the Hobbit!! Seriously. Can. Not. Wait!

Love LOTR, though not as much as you (apparently!). Orcs are soulless monsters, which makes killing them easy. They're a perfect enemy.
Kinda like Stormtroopers in Star Wars. They're just clones, not "real people," so the audience doesn't mind watching the good guys just leave a pile of bad guys dead!

Oh yeah, orcs are awesome. I especially like the leader with that cool bow and huge arrows. I don't know if that was how I imagined them when I first read LOTR (it's been so long ago), but I do applaud what they came up with. Great choice.

I loved Lord of the Rings. Everything. Not only the visuals, but the soundtrack too. So much of it just gave you that sense of inpending doom.
I can't wait til my kids are old enough to watch. Right now, I'm afraid the Orcs and others might give them nightmares.

LOTR is truly an amazing trilogy, the books the movies...I love them..I've seen pictures from the new movie and it looks good, but I miss the fact that they are changing some of the actors.
I'm hopelessly addicted to all things LOTR, movies-books - board games- you name it. I have watched ALL the extra features on the DVD's including chasing Easter Eggs and watching all the commentary. We recently brought the blurays so it's time to watch it all again. Bliss.
Orcs. They definitely are nasty curs, aren't they? Definitely a fan of the books and the trilogy, and I'm eagerly awaiting the Hobbit....
