Howdy, folks! Happy U Day. And continuing my fave fictional characters A-Z, today is a character we can all love to hate.
U is for:
Umbridge, Professor Dolores
Oh what a hateful character, and positively genius! That plastic looking face stretched taut with thin menacing lips ... deceitfully dressed in delicate pinks ... annoyingly obsessed with pictures and baubles of kittens and cats ... perfectly swept coiffure .... and the self-appointed ambassador to all things proper.
Dolores Umbridge is flat out evil. A wolf in sheep's clothing. The kind of teacher every kid hates, but are terrified of. The twist is that Umbridge thinks she's doing good and standing up for what's right. These are just the kind of people that there is no remedy for, that cannot be broken nor enlightened because they are convinced they are always right and the only way is their way.
UGH! Makes my skin crawl! And any character that can do that is designed perfectly. Characters that elicit reactions whether good or bad, are doing their job.
Tell me, do you have a Dolores Umbridge in your life? I sure do.
Thanks so much for stopping by here on the home stretch of Blogging A-Z! How do you feel about Dolores Umbridge? Or is there another character you can think of that gets a rise out of you? Please share ...

I used to have an Umbridge in my life - but I don't deal well with people like that, so I chose to move away from her!
I have had teachers like Umbridge and they did great damage to my psyche. Great post, Pk

Oh man, she gets under my skin too. Definitely a well-written, nasty character!
I don't have an Umbridge in my life (thank goodness) but I love the character. She's a very well written evil, evil woman.
Oh, Umbridge is such a rotten despicable character... and Imelda Staunton really brought that character to life out of the pages and made her all the more irritating. Plus the composer's score cue for her had the very same effect, literally having that fingernails on a blackboard effect.
I've had a couple of Umbridges in my family. I've had to cut them completely out of my life for my own well being.
Ooooh, she really, really made me mad - more so in the film than the book. A brilliant British actress, I'm glad to say :)
Luckily I've never had an Umbridge in my life. She sounds extra creepy. I don't think I've seen her before.
Quite possibly the most sadistic woman in the HP universe...Gah. The blood quill still gives me the heebie jeebies, and has since I read the book.
I definitely had a Miss Umbridge in my life! I shiver at the memory of her still! Yikes! take care
x
She is a profoundly unpleasant human being....
I used to have one of her in my life. Today I'm so happy to say I have no Dolores Umbridges nearby. YAY!
One of the best written characters EVER. So diverse, and everyone can see how irrational she is, excluding herself. Terrible, terrible woman!
I wondered when I would see a Professor Delores Umbridge post. I'm re-reading Order of the Phoenix and I'll watch the show again this weekend. Yeah, I had a few Umbridges as teachers. Great post!
And definitely worth a Tweet!
Fortunately I don't know anyone that bad. Her demise was satisfying though.
I'm embarrassed to admit, I can't remember this character *hangs head in shame*
I used to know someone like her,
so after years of "Putting Up" with her, I moved out of her life.
Loved the post a very good U post.
Yvonne.
Well, if makes you feel better Pk, there's a theory that Umbridge was raped by centaurs in the fifth book.
It made me feel better. She's a first rate villain.
My kids have dubbed her The Pink Lady and my 8 year old son loves to do her horrible little laugh noise, it's too funny, then you think of how horrible she is... Down with all the Pink Ladies!
I think everyone has one of these characters in their life, either close or on the fringe. I had a boss like that. On matters of mere semantics his way was always the right way regardless. Sheesh. The pride of some people is insane.
I had a coworker like that. I'm glad I don't work with her any longer.
I did...she was my cooperating teacher when I was student teaching. She was evil. I don't know why, but she just hated me.
Horrid, horrid woman. Perfectly written.
Ugh! Umbridge was truly despicable. A character everyone loves to hate.
I guess I'm a big dummy b/c I haven't heard of her...and I think she looks kinda cute and matronly. However, I take 'umbridge' at Blogger's new editing/posting controls. Very confusing. The old way was better, right?

Oh how I loved hating her and through the entire book I couldn't wait for her to get vanquished !! Two women come back and raise the hair on my neck ... a nun who chased girls with a very sharp letter opener who they had to retire in mid term and an English teacher who loved to call on one boy because he had a stutter. Evil lurks :)
She played the part so well that I don't like reading about her or watching her in the movie.
I think we all have one in our life even if we don't see it.
Hate her. Hate her. Hate her. The punishment she gave Harry with the words being etched on his skin totally creeped me out. I though Imelda Staunton played her perfectly in the films.
