My Top Ten Best Movies

As part of the Top Ten Movie Countdown blogfest hosted by the Blogfather himself, Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh, I'm sharing my medley of fantasy, family, sci-fi, adventure, and romance!

Click on the pic to get to HDQ and check out all the entries. If you're a film buff like me, this should be a fun day! After my weekend at MegaCon in Orlando, I'm psyched to talk about movies today. Everything from life size Star Wars characters, including actual working R2D2 units approaching you and trying to communicate ... to the delorean complete with flux capacitor and life size daleks from Doctor Who, lots of inspiration. Not to mention all the amazing comic book and anime artists.  And you should've seen the Lego pit! They had the complete set of Lost the TV show built out of Legos.

AnyWho ....

My top ten in no particular order ...

1. ROMANCING THE STONE  -- Yep, this one has to be my fave of all time. I think I was like eleven or twelve when it came out and it was everything I love about great stories. Adventure, romance, treasure maps, jungles, clues, and the main character is an author. Probably no coincidence I often look like this today while writing in my PJs:

Joan Wilder fans unite! :D

2. JAWS-- Okay so I'm a HUGE shark fan. I don't know why, they just fascinate me and this movie is a staple. Maybe it's the 70s setting that lulls me in, or the ending with 3 unlikely fisherman stuck in a small boat with the same goal, but this film is my pacifier if I can't go to sleep. Hubby laughs 'cause I find it soothing. Yep, I'm weird like that.

3. FORREST GUMP -- Super stellar soundtrack for one, and I just love the feelgood story. Plus, Tom Hanks is brill!

4. STARDUST -- This one's a close runner up for my number one spot. It's got everything I love about a great story, plus the fun of magic!

5. TRISTAN & ISOLDE -- Probably my fave romantic film. Makes my heart flutter every time. James Franco as Tristan is pure perfection here.

6.  STAR TREK IV -- After reviewing ALL the films not too long ago, I have to say that number 4 is my fave. Such a great story and so many fun parts! The world will forever be using the phrase, "colorful metaphors."

7. LOTR -- After this trilogy I was actually depressed there wouldn't be anymore. That's how much I loved them. But lo and behold, Peter Jackson came through to do The Hobbit, which is one of my fave books of all time. I've considered sending him a thank you card. ;)

8. THE GOONIES -- My childhood fave that changed me for all time. I think my entire universe shifted after seeing this one in the theatre and it was so comforting to know there were filmmakers in existence that understood me. lol

9. BRAVEHEART -- A must watch for me every few years. Nothing gets me more psyched than a William Wallace call to action!

10. OFFICE SPACE -- Because I have to include a comedy, this one makes me laugh EVERY time and I often feel like the main character with my corporate job and the constant rut I live in while doing it.

And man, there are so many more faves on my list: INDIANA JONES TRILOGY, HIGHLANDER, OUT OF AFRICA, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO (most recent version,) STAR WARS A NEW HOPE AND EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, STEEL MAGNOLIAS, COLD MOUNTAIN, MEMENTO ...

But alas, I must stop somewhere. Here's some fun pics from MegaCon:

Jawa in the midst ...

Dalek costume (there's a little girl inside and her dad's dressed as Dr. Who behind her. )

And the attack of Roxy the rancon from Return of the Jedi. My son ain't scared he's ready to take her down.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Are you participating in the blogfest? If not, what are some of your fave movies?

Great movie picks! I definitely agree with The Goonies - it's a fave from my childhood that I still love watching. I can also relate to Office Space sometimes. ;) It would be hard for me to pick just 10 movies, but I can pick two that are tied for first place: The Wizard of Oz and Dirty Dancing.

Crystal Collier said...

What a great list! (And I love that you extended it some.) I've been MIA for a week or two, so I missed the bloghop, but my all time fav's include Princess Bride, Serenity, Underworld, and Meet the Robinsons to name a few.

LOTR, Goonies, I wish the lists could have been longer! And great pics, looks like you guys had a lot of fun at MegaCon. (:

Oh yes! Bravehart & Office Space. Excellent picks. Have you seen my stapler?

I'm not part of the blogfest, but I'm enjoying seeing everyone's posts!

I left a comment similar to this somewhere else, but one of my favorite movies is Sweet Home Alabama. I love the way love wins and how the husband couldn't stop thinking of his wife (and getting her back).

D.G. Hudson said...

Love the pics of the costumes at the Con you attended.

I liked Braveheart, movies with a historical basis make us want to know more. . .Mel did a good job with this one. (He's does past and future films with panache - he just can't behave)

Oh, yes, Jaws and Romancing the Stone are true classics. I think I used to own them both in VHS but haven't gotten their replacements yet. I loved Kathleen Turner in that movie :)

Lexa Cain said...

I'm thrilled to see "Jaws" on your list (although puzzled that it soothes you). I think it's like a masterclass in the perfect adventure/horror story -- it's got pacing, deep characterization, plotline, and lulls the audience with comedy before smacking them with horror.
Love the con pics! :-)

Tristan and Isolde was really good. And then there's the classics on your list ... Jaws - Love it!

I've seen about half the films on your list. The most current film on my own list, my all-time favoritest movie, was from 1991. I just gravitate towards classics, and just about the only modern films I really get into are foreign and/or long historical dramas.

Great post, PK - not sure how you narrowed it down to 10! Nice to see some family films in there - I recently watched Romancing The Stone, Stardust and Goonies with my 11 year old daughter. It is great to be able to share child hood movie memories with your children. My personal number one would have to be The Godfather - but it will be quite a few years before I can introduce my daughter to that one!

Nice to meet you PK, via DL

Very deserving!

Wonderful list, I would agree with the majority of it, and my wife would probably agree with all of it.

I LOVED Romancing The Stone-Joan Wilder and loved the leetle mule, lol! Voyage Home, Out of Africa--all great movies! I've watch many on your list here.

Hugs!

A great list. Love LoTR, Star Trek IV and Jaws. Somehow I've gottne round to seeing The Goonies - a serious gap in my geek cred I feel.

Good to see Star Wars and Memento getting namechecked as well. That's the trouble with "favourite film" polls - once you start thinking about it the list takes on a life of its own and can easily run away with you. I doubt I could limit mine to 10, 20 or even 50 ;-)

Sarah Chafin said...

Great list! Stardust is wonderful. Now I want to go watch it again! Braveheart is one of my all time favorites too. Actually most of the movies you listed are favorites of mine. Hope your day is amazing :)

By the list of movies I can see that you like a good mix of romance and adventure with sprinkles of nail biting action and giggles on the side. On the side is very good! Love, love, love the stars on your blog! Happy writing.

My favorite movie:
Kingdom of Heaven, directed by Ridley Scott.

Braveheart and LOTR are up there, too.

Though it isn't my favorite, I like Star Trek IV because it actually has humor in it.

Braveheart, yes! What a lovely blog you have. Am a movie buff too and love your choice. I could never choose a top ten. I'd do more like a top fifty or hundred, I think!

Happy day to you!

I love Romancing the Stone!! It was a film I discovered completely on accident and loved. I think maybe I secretly dream of having an adventure like that myself.

I'm totally with you on Starlight. My hubby and I rarely buy movies, because most are "not worthy", but that's one we had to add to our eclectic collection.

Good choices. My husband and I quote Romancing the Stone all the time. (Well, especially since I'm a writer.) "THE Joan Wilder? I read your books! I read all your books!" and, of course, "Does this bus go to Cartagena? I need to get to Cartagena."

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Office Space. That movie is hysterical. I can't go to one of those American style chain restaurants without thinking "Pieces of Flair" to myself, and why didn't you ask for 33 pieces of flair in the first place?

Would you believe I've never seen Jaws? So you gave away the ending, LOL.

I'm here as part of the Blitz Love! Hope to see more movie lists!

A word to the wise never watch Braveheart whilst sat on the floor - you won't be able to stand up when the film ends. I know that from experience!

I would put Shawshank in my top ten. That movie about killed me...I was so moved by it!

I was one of those people who never got around to watching it and then a friend of mine sat me down cause they couldn't believe I had never seen the movie (Shaw shank Redemption) and I was BLOWN away when I finally got to see it!

Hope you're enjoying the "Blitz"!

Take care!
