G is for ...

I think somebody's got a case of the Mondays ... (that'd be me!)

But Happy G Day! My theme for the month is villains and/or settings, and in honor of the gorgeous letter G, I give you:

GOLLUM

What's great about Gollum, is that we get the full history of his demise. And even glimpses of the sliver of goodness inside that wants to come out. He is the one who must endure the brunt of full evil from the One Ring. So weak is he, in fact, that he kills his own brother over the shiny precious. It calls to him, and as its slave, Gollum continues to do whatever it takes to keep it.

Ever wonder what would've happened if Bilbo hadn't removed the One Ring from Gollum's cave? Well, we'd miss out on some of the best stories ever, but it'd probably have kept Middle Earth safe for a lot longer. Gollum would've kept it hidden away forever. Then that stinkin' Bilbo came along ...

And who could forget about:

GRU

This heartless villain can take down just about anyone, that is, til three little girls soften him up. From Despicable Me, Gru is the ultimate bad guy with minions who do his bidding, and a mad scientist to create his torturous weapons. Even with Gru we get a glimpse as to why he's so bad--his mom never paid attention to his genius, and the poor child grew up with a chip on his shoulder. His only arch-enemies are other villains as they compete for badness, but none can top Gru in the end.

Did yall love this movie, or what?? I've seen it so many times, and I always get sucked in. Steve Carrell does the voice and just nails it. Number 2 is coming out soon!

Any thoughts on Gollum or Gru? Have a different G villain you can think of? How was the weekend?

Got to love Gollum, stupid hobbitses.

Gollum is a perfect one for G. I let my daughter watch the start of one of the LOTR movies when she was in grade school. She got scared and I worried I was a bad mom for letting her see it. He's so creepy.

Awesome choices! Gollum is one of those characters you just have to love. I mean, once you get through all his flaws, weirdness, and displeasing exterior. There is something so pathetic about him, at least for me, that moves me.

Haha...I loved Despicable Me!!

These are good though I wouldn't like to encounter them in the dark.

Honestly was Gollum really a villain? He was just mentally off like the humans with the power of the ring.

I watched The Hobbit this weekend. Gollum certainly has some personality issues. The poor dude. He just needs some therapy and love. :D

Great choices. I never really liked the movies but Gollum in the book freaked me out!

Both are awesome choices.

I'm looking forward to Despicable Me II. I love Gru and the minions.

Gollum is one of my favorite antiheroes, because he stands for what the Ring will do. You do get the sense that once, he was just as good as Frodo, but the ring has turned him from Smeagol into this creature, and while you see Smeagol coming out every now and again, he's ultimately the symbol of everything Frodo has to lose if he fails at his task.

Things like that are why LoTR is such a classic, methinks.

Awwwwww I sort of feel sorry for Gollum even if he's totally unhinged and will probably kill and eat me the minute my back's turned cos he's so crazy! LOL!!

Oh it's so Monday! Take care

Yeah Gollum was more pitiable than hateable. The best villains are ones with a rich backstory that explain in part their craziness.

I <3 Gru! "It's so fluffy!!!"

Gollum was among the creepiest of villains. You picked a good one for today! I'll admit I haven't seen Despicable Me.

Gollum is a fascinating, although ugly creature. It is interesting to learn his entire story. Thanks for your post, and happy A to Z!

My precious! Gollum is such a fascinating character. Disgusting and yet sad. I love LOTR movies.

Never saw Despicable Me. Now I realize what I'm missing!

I love your theme for this challenge. What a fantastic idea. And Gollum, he's such a great character. Has depth and character. And down right creepy in a fantastically quotable way.

Gollum is a fabulous villain--and my favorite twist--that by the hero showing compassion and sympathy, the villain ends up helping the hero in the end... I adore that twist. Haven't seen Gru... I think my kids are too old... we haven't seen any of the Pixar movies since about Wall-E.

I would like to know how you got hold of my driving license photograph. Is there no privacy any more?

Here's a shocker...I've not seen DM yet, and I don't really know why since we own the movie! :)

Aha, I've mentioned this before. Did you know that Tolkien got some of his inspiration from observing the locals of the town I now live in? He stayed for a short time in Leek, Staffordshire and some of the locals inspired his characters for "Middle-earth". Actually, one of my neighbours looks suspiciously like Gollum :)

Sadly, I've never seen "Despicable Me". Okay, maybe once in my full-length mirror.

Gary :)

Knowing as much as we do about Gollum-Smeagol makes him so maddening. And so compelling. He's an amazing character.
